Dr. Jane Mahakian is a gerontologist who has worked and advocated for adults with mental deterioration caused by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias for over 30 years in San Francisco, California. She founded “Aging Matters” in 1998 to help those patients and their families by providing personalized care management and counseling.

Prior to establishing “Aging Matters” Dr. Mahakian directed the University of California San Francisco Elder Care Referral Program for 10 years. She developed the leadership to provide resources and other information for UCSF faculty, staff and students dealing with elder care challenges.

She holds a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Berkeley. She is the USA Representative of the Alzheimer’s Association of Armenia. She wanted to extend her expertise to help people with mental impairment in Armenia by offering solutions for care and treatment. To accomplish this she founded “Alzheimer’s Care Armenia” in 2017. That year she also published a paper about getting beyond the fear and stigma of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. This fear and/or stigma is preventing early diagnosis, care and research into the disease.

With the support of the Republic of Armenia, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Alzheimer’s Care Armenia partnered with the Alzheimer’s Disease Association of Armenia to create a 9-month Alzheimer’s Disease Training Academy Certification Program. The program began in March 2019 and assists in educating Social Workers, Primary Care Physicians, Nurses, Caregivers and Psychologists.

A caring individual, Dr. Jane Mahakian uses her education and 30+ years of practical experience to improve the education of caregivers and to support the families of patients who have dementias. Everyone involved gains the help needed to best deal with these diseases.
